Macunaíma Ópera Baile - Workshop Theater

(2010)

In 2010 Iara deepened her research and found at the IEB (Institute of Brazilian Studies) an original document written by Mário entitled "Macunaíma - Ópera em Seis Quadros". This discovery leaves her even more amazed and convinced of her mission to perform the play. It is in the historic Teatro Oficina (by Zé Celso Martinez Correia), that the first opera performance takes place. Accompanied by musicians, dancers, performers and virtual participations, Iara lends her body and her art to the character, performing her musical compositions which, as the artist herself says, were as if “received” via transcendental inspirations. Bringing together excerpts from the book with letters written by Mário de Andrade, among other references, the artist recreates the saga of the Macunaíma anti-hero, transfigured in Macunawoman, in the skin of actress Thalma de Freitas.
